South Alabama reserve quarterback Trey Fetner had the opportunity to make the first play of his collegiate career Saturday in the jaguars' 31-10 loss to Troy. And he made the most of itThe 6-foot-0, 195-pound redshirt freshman quarterback from Woodland was sent into the game with the Jags on the Troy 3 yard line on a first-and-goal play. Fetner took the snap and burst through an opening in the line of scrimmage to score a touchdown, the Jags' only touchdown of the game.
He would be called on one other time in the game with the Jags facing a fourth down-and-1 situation. Again, he took the snap, found an opening in the line and picked up the yard needed for the first down. For the game, his official stats read two carries, 4 total yards, 2.0 yards per carry, one touchdown.
Those are also his career stats.
"It was a pretty exciting feeling,'' Fetner said. "I was thankful for the opportunity from coach (Joey) Jones and coach (Bryant) Vincent and coach (Robert) Matthews. I've prayed about it and dreamed about it ever since I was a little boy, to be a college quarterback and to score. So it was a very humbling experience also.
"I have a great offensive line. My first run, the touchdown, anyone could have run through it. It was pretty easy. I just did my job and they did their job and it was pretty easy for me.''
Fetner said he didn't know if the playing time against Troy would signal more playing time in the future, but he said he has confidence the coaching staff makes its decisions based on what's best for the team and if that means he will get more playing time he will do his best in those situations.
"I believe in this coaching staff and I believe I'm on God's timing and He's going to call my number when I'm ready,'' Fetner said. "I feel like I'm capable of handling the offense and as soon as the coaches think I'm ready I think they're going to call me. I trust them.''
