MOBILE, Alabama -- Despite being a young program, South Alabama'sfootball team has some experienced players on its roster.
But there is a need for an influx of new players who can step in and contribute, especially with the 13-game schedule the Jags face this season.
As the team prepares for its spring game Saturday, returning players such as Jake Johnson, C.J. Bennett, Bryant Lavender, B.J. Scott and Trey Clark have led the way, but there are others who may play key roles for the Jags this season.
Here's a position-by-position look at some players to watch:

The freshman from Woodland hasn't been a surprise to the Jags' coaching staff. He displayed the ability to throw the football with some zip and accuracy during practices last season. This spring, he has challenged Bennett for the starting role and moved into the No. 2 spot. The 6-foot, 195-pounder is cool under pressure. He not only has an accurate arm, but he is adept at running. He is a good fit for Robert Matthews' spread offense.
